Tegoleto: Medieval Tower, San Biagio and Markets

Historical Traces in the Town Center

The medieval tower in the town center of Tegoleto has been preserved to this day. It is considered the only surviving evidence of the town’s medieval defensive structures. Among the older traces is the apse area of the Romanesque church of San Biagio, whose remains can be seen in Tegoleto. The church already existed in the 10th century and was renovated in the 12th century. The new church of San Biagio was built in 1787 to replace the older, dilapidated church. The chronological sequence thus extends from the Romanesque remains to the new building of 1787.

Festivals Celebrating Saint Blaise

The patron saint’s festival of Saint Blaise, San Biagio in Italian, takes place in Tegoleto on February 3. The Fiera di San Biagio is held every year on the Sunday following February 3. Both dates give the place name San Biagio a vibrant cultural significance and provide a clear reason to include Tegoleto in your personal travel plans if you appreciate local traditions and fixed event dates. The Fiera is determined by the Sunday following February 3, rather than by a separate date within a specific month.

Regional Products in the Piazza

Another facet of the town is showcased by the „Mercato dei sapori e della terra“. The annual event has reached its sixth edition and takes place in the renovated Piazza della Chiesa. There, it brings together numerous local producers and presents regional specialties: cold cuts, cheese, wine, craft-brewed beer and heritage grain varieties.

Tegoleto’s flat location along the Senese-Aretina road and the fertile surrounding area historically shaped the town as an important center for the production and collection of agricultural products.
