Traiana originated as a Roman settlement. It was located near the Cassia Vetus, the Roman transport route between Arezzo and Fiesole. The regular division of many plots of land, as well as the straight, perpendicular field paths around Traiana, are considered typical features of ancient Roman centuriation. The Walled Village on the Hill

The medieval walled village of Traiana is located on a small hill, about 200 metres from the main square, on the site of the castle houses. Within this historical setting, a hospice dedicated to the Apostle Andrew was founded. Pilgrims travelling to Saint Peter’s in Rome were accommodated there free of charge. The history of the place therefore also tells of a time when Traiana was connected with the movements of religious travellers.

After some of the castle’s inhabitants moved to the large market square, the parish church of San Fabiano e San Sebastiano was built there.

Landscape, Views and Paths

From Traiana’s ancient centre, you can enjoy a view of the almost untouched landscape of this area. The regular field paths and open surroundings also make clear how closely the history of the settlement is connected with the land around it.

The approximately ten-kilometre route through the Valle dell’Ascione is also recommended for cycling tours. The route can therefore be taken into account when planning a day by bicycle. Traiana can be reached via a paved road, providing clear orientation when travelling to the village. The Cappella Polverini is located among the vineyards of the Fattoria La Traiana owned by Giandomenico Gigante.

A Cultural Highlight at Sunrise

The “Concerto all’Alba nella Vigna” concert in Traiana reached its twelfth edition in 2026. At this concert, music, reflections and nature came together at sunrise.
