Terranuova Bracciolini combines a clearly recognisable urban history with striking landscape formations and local traditions. If you enjoy understanding Italian towns through their urban fabric, the story here begins with a fortified Florentine settlement: construction began in 1337. To this day, Terranuova Bracciolini preserves a recognisable rectangular urban layout, typical of fortified Florentine settlements founded from scratch.

Culture and historical documents

A distinctive cultural feature is the Le Fornaci cultural centre. It is housed in a fully restored former brickworks and, since 2005, has accommodated the municipal library and an auditorium within a shared cultural space. Terranuova's history also extends into the pre-unification historical archive. It contains the documentation produced by the Municipality of Terranuova from its foundation until 1865, along with extensive records relating to the municipality, the Podesteria and the former municipality of Castiglion Ubertini. The archive is located in Palazzo Concini at Via Concini 3.

The Balze and their trails

The Balze give the landscape a distinctive character. They are landforms shaped by erosion, with vertical walls, isolated rock towers, narrow ridges and earth pyramids. Since 1998, the Balze have been designated as a locally protected natural area of particular interest, an ANPIL. Thus, alongside the rectangular urban layout, unusual natural formations are also central to the way the town is experienced.

Some viewpoints in the Balze can be reached via municipal roads connecting the various localities. Some paths in the Balze can be travelled on horseback or by mountain bike. This allows the landscape to be viewed from different perspectives in motion, without implying a single unified route.

For a specific hike, the Sentiero dell’Acqua Zolfina is a good choice: the circular trail, marked as CAI 51, passes through the landscape of the Balze, is just over 7 kilometres long and presents no particular hiking difficulties. The combination of a circular route, trail marking and precise distance makes it easier to fit this trail into your day plan.

Nature observation, festivals and local products

Another aspect of the landscape is represented by the lake and wetland of the Valle dell’Inferno and Bandella nature reserves. They are an important resting place for a diverse population of waterbirds. The nature theme therefore extends from the eroded forms of the Balze to protected wetlands of importance for migrating and resting waterbirds.

The events calendar also shapes the experience. The Festa del Perdono takes place in September and has a history spanning more than four centuries. The Fiera dell’Antiquariato traditionally takes place every second Sunday of the month in the squares of the historic centre of Terranuova Bracciolini. Local products include Fagiolo Zolfino, a typical local product from the Terranuova Bracciolini area, which is classified under the DOCG designation, as well as Pancetta Tarese, produced in Terranuova Bracciolini and recognised as a Slow Food Presidio.
