Beach and Mining History

Innamorata combines Spiaggia dell’Innamorata with a landscape where the history of mining reaches all the way to the sea. Spiaggia dell’Innamorata is approximately 280 metres long and has dark sand. Next to it lies the small beach of Punta delle Ciarpe, where traces of mining can still be seen. The Museo della Vecchia Officina

A central place for this connection is the Museo della Vecchia Officina. It is housed in the workshops of Cantiere Vallone and displays original objects and equipment, historical documents, and maps. The exhibition focuses on the lives of the miners, the history of mining, and the development of the area. This gives the name Innamorata a specific historical context that extends beyond the beach.

The Museo della Vecchia Officina is also the starting point for several trekking routes and guided tours of the mines, beaches, and trails of Monte Calamita. A visit can therefore be combined with exploring the surrounding area, without having to consider the themes of coast, mining, and outdoor activity separately.

Trails on Monte Calamita

A documented route also leads through this landscape by mountain bike. The Monte Calamita e Miniere di Capoliveri MTB route passes the turn-off for Spiaggia dell’Innamorata, descends to the sea along the old railway line, and runs through the Calone mining area to the Museo della Vecchia Officina.

The Way of the Old Railway follows the former railway line between the Vallone open-cast mining area and the former loading point near Innamorata beach, opposite the Gemini Islets. The terms “former” and “former railway line” are important here: the route is a reminder of the area’s former industrial use and should not be understood as a currently operating rail connection.

Gemini Islets and the Sea

The Gemini Islets lie near Spiaggia dell’Innamorata and are used for excursions. They can be reached by canoe, pedal boat, or by swimming. Their seabed is rich in marine life and attracts snorkelling enthusiasts. Innamorata therefore offers not only traces of its history to explore, but also a clear connection to excursions on the water and observing the underwater world.

Innamorata beach can be reached by MareBus. A special event in Capoliveri is the Festa degli Innamorati on 14 July. The festival includes a procession and a large torchlight event at sea.

The nearby area around Innamorata includes Calanova, Istria, and Spiaggia di Naregno, each a beach. The area around Innamorata also includes Spiaggia Di Barbarossa, likewise a beach, as well as several cultural attractions: Forte Focardo is a fort, Castello del Volterraio is a castle, Villa di San Martino is a palace, and the Museo Nazionale delle Residenze Napoleoniche dell'isola d'Elba is a museum.
