Elba between Coast, Nature and History

Elba is the largest island in Tuscany and, after Sicily and Sardinia, the third-largest island in Italy. Along its 147 kilometres of coastline, beaches of golden sand, pebbles and black sand alternate; the latter’s colour is due to iron. The island therefore combines varied landscapes with the sea, hiking routes and a multifaceted history.

Getting There and Protected Nature

Elba is one of the Tuscan islands protected by the Parco Nazionale dell’Arcipelago Toscano, which was established to preserve their natural habitats.

For hiking, the national park’s recommended trails are divided into family-friendly, easy and challenging categories. Family-friendly trails have an elevation gain of less than 200 metres and take an average of less than two hours. Easy trails involve approximately 200 to 500 metres of elevation gain and take an average of two to three and a half hours. Challenging trails involve approximately 450 to 800 metres of elevation gain or more difficult sections. This range makes it easier for you to compare different tours. Mining and Earlier Island History

The Santuario della Madonna del Monte is Elba’s oldest sanctuary and dates back to the 12th century. The Percorso del Monte Capanne leads to the Romitorio di San Cerbone, which was built in 575 AD and can only be viewed from the outside. The Museo Archeologico del Distretto Minerario in Rio nell’Elba focuses on mining activities that have shaped Elba’s history since the Copper Age. The Parco Minerario dell’Isola d’Elba focuses on the island’s most important and oldest mines. At the Valle Giove mining area, you can search for pyrite and hematite specimens.

Napoleonic Residences

Villa San Martino on Elba is Napoleon’s summer residence and is now a museum. It houses 19th-century prints and contemporary furniture in fresco-decorated rooms, including the so-called “Sala egizia”. The Palazzina dei Mulini houses memorabilia, furnishings and furniture from the period, as well as part of the library that the emperor brought with him.

Festivals and Museums

In the immediate vicinity of Livorno are the Museo Mascagnano, the Museo Ebraico and the Museo Provinciale di Storia Naturale, each a museum, as well as the Palazzo del Picchetto, a palace. Also nearby are the Acquario di Livorno, which belongs to the zoo category, and the beaches Spiaggia del Felciaio, Spiaggia per Cani and Spiaggia libera per cani.
