Corella between Fortress History and Mountain Landscapes

Corella combines a turbulent fortress history with a mountain landscape where scenic trails, wooded slopes and historic buildings are closely interconnected. The themes range from Belforte and the Pieve di San Martino a Corella to the mountains and sections of the CAI-00 trail.

Fortress, Church and Historic Trails

Andrea del Castagno and his family sought refuge in the fortress of Belforte in Corella during the wars between Florence and Milan. Belforte stood on the heights west of the Pieve di San Martino a Corella and was located at an Apennine pass leading from the Val di Sieve to the Lamone Valley in Romagna. The fortress therefore represents not only a single historic site, but also the former importance of the passes between the valleys.

The Pieve di San Martino a Corella was restored and reopened for worship by 1925.

In the wider area around Corella are Castello di Porciano, Museo Bandini, Museo Stibbert and Villa Medici at Careggi. Castello di Porciano is a castle, Museo Bandini and Museo Stibbert are museums, and Villa Medici at Careggi is a palace. The different building types thus range from a castle and museums to a palace.

Mountains, Ridges and the Corella Stream

The landscape around Corella is shaped by several mountains. Monte Veruca, Monte Falterona, Monte Falco and Poggio Sodo dei Conti are mountains in the area around Corella. The ridges of Monte di Gattaia and the Acchieri overlook Corella from the northeast. This creates a landscape in which the location of the village is defined by the surrounding heights and ridges.

Another geographical connection is provided by the stream of the same name, which flows through Corella and rises at Monte Peschiena. The stream adds another landscape element around Corella to the mountains and ridges.

Hiking on the CAI-00 Trail

For hikers, the CAI-00 trail offers two sections with different characteristics. Between Poggio al Tiglio and Giogo di Corella, the trail is not very rugged and offers excellent views. This section takes 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes and involves 250 metres of elevation gain.

From Giogo di Corella to Passo del Muraglione, the CAI-00 trail is easy and offers excellent views. It first crosses summit meadows, then low beech forests and subsequently pine forests. Compared with the first section, the focus here is particularly on the changing landscapes as well as the views.

How to Reach the Anello di Corella

From Florence, the route to the Anello di Corella leads via Pontassieve, the SS 67 and Dicomano. After approximately 4.5 km, turn towards Corella. This figure should be understood as an approximation.
