Dicomano between riverside landscapes and Etruscan heritage

Dicomano combines a distinctive riverside setting with the landscapes of Mugello and Val di Sieve. The town lies where the Comano River flows into the Sieve River. Around Dicomano, the mountain landscapes typical of Mugello meet the valley areas characteristic of Val di Sieve. Green beech, oak and chestnut forests grow on the slopes. Here, nature, regional landscapes and traces of cultural history therefore come together within a compact thematic area.

Architecture and archaeology in Dicomano

One prominent building is the Oratorio di Sant'Onofrio. It was built in 1796 to a design by the Florentine architect Giuseppe Del Rosso and is an example of Italian Neoclassicism. Its interior has a central layout and is topped by a dome resting on sixteen columns with Corinthian capitals. Those interested in architecture will therefore find at this oratory not only a historical date, but also clearly recognizable neoclassical forms.

The Museo Archeologico comprensoriale houses finds and excavation results from the Etruscan archaeological sites of San Martino a Frascole in Dicomano. It also includes archaeological and historical evidence from the entire Mugello, Alto Mugello and Val di Sieve areas. The museum is also accessible to people with reduced mobility. Due to renovation work, it has been closed since March 31, 2026, until further notice.

Frascole and the Etruscan traces

The archaeological area of Frascole includes the remains of the small church of San Martino, built in the mid-13th century. The archaeological finds include a well-preserved funerary stele of the Fiesolan type dating from the 6th century BC. The excavations also include the significant remains of a large Etruscan building identified as either a sanctuary or a defensive structure. The San Martino a Poggio – Frascole archaeological area is part of Tuscany's archaeological route.

Trails combining landscapes and history

The Sentiero Piandrati - Il Lago - Anello E represents a combination of physical activity and local history. It offers panoramic views as well as examples of medieval and Renaissance architecture. The trail begins at Piazza della Repubblica and leads to the A. Bartolozzi cycling and walking path. Its route therefore connects a specific starting point in the town with scenic views and architectural evidence from different periods.

The trekking routes in the municipality of Dicomano also include the Sentiero degli Etruschi - Anello D. It is connected to the route sequence Pista Ciclabile – Sandetole – Scavi Frascole – La Cella – Ponte Vecchio.
