San Bartolomeo: Architectural History and Altarpiece

The Church of San Bartolomeo was built in 1568 to replace an earlier structure. The earlier building was damaged in 1536 and completely abandoned after a flood. It is therefore part of the history preceding the present church, while 1568 marks the beginning of the current building.

The Church of San Bartolomeo contains dark-glazed ceramic baptismal fonts made from one of the planters that Galileo Chini designed in the early 1920s for the Berzieri spa in Salsomaggiore. The large altarpiece is considered the most important sight in the small church. It depicts the Immaculate Virgin Mary with Saints Bartholomew, Andrew and Francis, as well as a bishop who may have been Bonaventure.
