Montefioralle: City Walls, Church and Chianti Culture

The Castello di Montefioralle has been preserved within its original ring of walls. As a result, the settlement is not centered around just a single building, but rather around a historic townscape that you can experience firsthand during your visit as a starting point for cultural and scenic impressions.

Castello and Chiesa di Santo Stefano

In the Middle Ages, the Castello di Montefioralle was one of the most important military and administrative centers in the entire valley. The Chiesa di Santo Stefano is located in the highest part of the Montefioralle settlement. Its interior has the appearance it acquired between the 17th and 18th centuries and was further altered by renovations in the 19th century. Those interested in the development of historic places, sacred architecture and the different layers of time represented in a building will find several themes brought together here in a very small area.

A building on the inner street of the borgo is also part of the site's traditional historical associations: it is traditionally described as the ancestral home of the family of the famous seafarer Amerigo Vespucci. Its lintel bears the family coat of arms and the V of the Vespucci family.

From Greve in Chianti to Montefioralle

Montefioralle can be reached from the center of Greve in Chianti by car or on foot. The walking route passes through olive groves and follows an uphill path. The olive groves and the climb are specific features of this walking connection and should be taken into account when planning your trip.

Chianti Classico and Tuscan Cuisine

Events dedicated to Chianti Classico take place in Montefioralle throughout the year. Local producers' wines are tasted alongside traditional dishes from Tuscan cuisine.

The wine event „I vini del Castello“ takes place in May and has been held since 2003. In addition, the food and wine event „I vini nel castello“ takes place on the third weekend of May in the square and along Montefioralle's main street. In March, during the Sagra delle Frittelle held for San Giuseppe, traditional rice fritters are fried in a large pan in a square in front of the entrance to the historic center. The different dates therefore have distinct focuses: the wine events center on Chianti Classico and local producers, while the Sagra delle Frittelle puts a traditional dish at the heart of the celebration.

Cycling Routes in Chianti Fiorentino

For active travel plans, Chianti Fiorentino offers two routes of different lengths. The „Grand Tour del Chianti Fiorentino“ circular route is more than 150 kilometers long and passes through Greve in Chianti, Radda in Chianti, Barberino Tavarnelle and San Casciano Val di Pesa. The „In mountain bike nel Chianti Fiorentino“ mountain-bike route is 44 kilometers long, includes 1,390 meters of elevation gain and is considered challenging because of the difference in altitude. It is recommended that you ride it by mountain bike. The different distances and requirements help you assess a route according to its length and level of sporting challenge when planning your trip.
