Ostina between Castle Traces and the Balze

Ostina combines a multifaceted local history with the distinctive landscape forms of the Balze. The first written mention of the castle dates back to 1060, while the Anello di Ostina circular trail leads through surroundings shaped by erosion. The History of the Castle and the Village of Castelnuovo

The old castle of Ostina was conquered and razed to the ground in 1305. After its destruction, the new village of Ostina, Castelnuovo, was established near San Tommaso. Castelnuovo of Ostina and its church were also expanded in 1314. Castelnuovo of Ostina is connected with the walled fortified settlement of 1427.

The surviving traces of Castelnuovo can be seen in the layout of the small village. Ostina is arranged around two central, narrow lanes. As a result, its historical development can be read not only in individual buildings but also shapes the character of the village. The ruins interpreted as Ostina's “Castelvecchio” consist of a few sections of crumbling walls and complement the picture of the former castle complex.

San Tommaso and Historical Architectural Traces

The Church of San Tommaso in Ostina dates back to the 12th century. Its façade and masonry preserve its original appearance. Together with the history of Castelnuovo, the church is an important historical point of reference in the village.

The Balze: Erosion, Rocks and Habitat
