The monastery church of Santa Maria a Rosano was extended in the 12th century and consecrated under the title of the Santissima Assunta. A markedly elevated presbytery is located above the “a pontile” crypt. The floor and altar of the crypt feature inlays of white and black marble; the checkerboard motif follows the Florentine style of the 12th century.

The large cloister is also one of the defining areas of Santa Maria a Rosano. It was built in the 16th century and designed in the Michelozzo style; it is spacious and characterized by harmonious arcades. In the monastery, the Liturgy of the Hours is celebrated in Gregorian chant and in Latin. The musical heritage also includes a fragmentary antiphonary, possibly dating from the 12th century and featuring Beneventan notation. During the restoration of the Croce di Rosano, a cavity containing a bone fragment and a small stone cross was discovered in the vertical arm of the cross.

Museums and Gardens in the Wider Surrounding Area

Several museums in the vicinity of Rosano are suitable for culture-oriented excursions: the Museo Bandini, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Firenze, the Museo Fiorentino di Preistoria Paolo Graziosi and the Museo Horne. Two gardens are also among the destinations in the surrounding area: the Giardino Del Museo Archeologico and the Giardino di San Clemente. This allows you to combine sacred architecture in Rosano with visits to museums and gardens across the wider area, without conflating the different places into a single complex.

Rosano as the Starting Point for a Cycling Tour

One specific way to experience the landscape actively is the cycling tour “In bici tra i boschi di Vallombrosa”. It starts in Rosano and returns to Rosano at the end. For cycling travelers, this creates a clearly defined circular route with the same place at the beginning and end. The monastery’s history provides another historical point of interest: Toward the end of the 12th century, a hospice may already have existed at Santa Maria a Rosano as lodging for pilgrims and travelers on their way to Rome or Romagna.
