Troghi: History, Trails and Sacred Architecture

Troghi tells its story through old roads, waterways, and remarkable examples of architecture and art. This makes the village interesting for travellers who, during their stay in Italy, want to see not only landscapes but also perceive historical connections and quiet cultural details.

A Place on a Historic Road

Troghi developed along the Via Vecchia Aretina, a road that connected Florence with Arezzo. The settlement emerged along this road beside two bridges at the confluence of two waterways. This combination of road, bridges, and water shapes the historic character of the village and gives its surroundings a clear narrative thread.

Troghi was presumably once a stopping point for travellers on this road. The buildings Le Poste and Spedaletto, an osteria, and a now-vanished fountain with a livestock trough point to this.

Experience the Trails of Memory on Foot

For hikers, the Sentiero della Memoria offers a historical yet practical way to explore the area. Starting in Faeto, the route is approximately 6 km long, has a maximum ascent of 150 m, and takes an average of 2 hours and 15 minutes to walk. Historically, the first section served as a connection for displaced people and partisans to inhabited places and military deployment sites, including those in the Troghi area. The route therefore represents not only movement through the landscape but also a history closely connected with the paths taken by people.

A shorter option is the Anello della Memoria circular route starting from the della Badiuzza cemetery. It is 5 km long, classified as easy (T), has a total ascent of 130 m, and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Art and Church Architecture in Troghi

The village's cultural history is also remarkable. The painting “Madonna con Bambino in trono con San Bernardo e Santa Lucia†is dated to 1489. The Italian title refers to a religious depiction of the Madonna, the Christ Child, San Bernardo, and Santa Lucia.

Another tangible example is the Church of the Sacratissimo Cuore di Gesù in Troghi. It was designed by Guido Morozzi in 1953. Its elongated nave plan and gabled roof give the building a clearly recognisable architectural form. Together with the dated painting, it provides a cultural perspective that connects different periods without conflating them.
