Stabbia combines historic buildings, memorial sites and a landscape that can be explored along a variety of paths. At its centre is the Villa-Fattoria di Stabbia, which forms part of the historic settlement of Stabbia. The hill with the Villa-Fattoria offers panoramic views of Padule di Fucecchio, providing a distinctive gateway to this landscape.
The Villa-Fattoria and its history
The history of the Villa-Fattoria di Stabbia dates back to the mid-16th century. Cosimo I had it built between 1548 and 1568. To this end, a fortification that had previously belonged to the Soderini family was adapted. Local church history is also connected with the Fattoria Medicea di Stabbia: records for 1784 note that the Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo Apostoli and its rectory were built in part of the fattoria. The church has a Latin-cross floor plan with a single nave and a transept.
Bonifica di Stabbia: a circular trail with changing landscapes
The Bonifica di Stabbia circular trail is a defining feature for orientation in the surrounding area. It is approximately 5 km long and runs along both paved and unpaved paths. The trail passes through land that once belonged to the Fattoria Medicea di Stabbia. Part of the route follows the bank of the Torrente Vincio, allowing visitors to approach Padule di Fucecchio and its reed beds. Along the same route, historical references, the watercourse and the characteristic vegetation of the Padule come together.
Gardens and memorial sites
The historic sites along the route include the Giardino della Meditazione. The garden commemorates the “Eccidio del Padule di Fucecchio” of 1944. Another specific memorial site in Stabbia is the Lapide ai caduti di Stabbia, a memorial plaque for civilian victims and Italian partisans. Piazza XXIII Agosto is also one of the places associated with this remembrance: a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the Eccidio del Padule di Fucecchio was announced there in Stabbia for 24 August 2024; a ceremony marking the 81st anniversary was announced at the same location for 23 August 2025.
