Cerreto Guidi between Medici history, trails and olive groves

Cerreto Guidi combines a landscape shaped by gentle hills with Medici history, historic religious buildings and paths through the municipal area. Villa Medicea and paths through Cerreto Guidi

The Villa Medicea di Cerreto Guidi was built at the request of Cosimo I de’ Medici as a hunting residence and strategic control point for the surrounding area, particularly overlooking the Padule di Fucecchio. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Ville e Giardini medicei in Toscana”. The six signposted circular hiking trails of the Anelli Medicei begin at the villa. The paths lead back to the historic town centre, thereby connecting the starting point at the villa with the town centre.

The fourth stage of the Via Medicea also leads to Cerreto Guidi. Along this route, the Villa Medicea di Cerreto Guidi and the Museo della Memoria Locale – MuMeLoc are among the attractions. Museums, churches and places of remembrance

The first floor of the villa houses the Museo Storico della Caccia e del Territorio. It mainly contains hunting and firearms from the 17th to the 19th century, thereby deepening the building's historical connection with its former use. The MuMeLoc is dedicated in particular to commemorating the massacre in the Padule di Fucecchio on 23 August 1944. The parish church of San Leonardo is located next to the Medici villa and has a history dating back to the 10th century. The Oratorio della Santissima Trinità dates from 1607, contains 18th-century frescoes and houses an altarpiece created in 1587 by Domenico Cresti, Il Passignano. The Santuario di Santa Liberata probably dates from 1336. According to tradition, it is associated with an oratory dedicated to the Virgin Mary. These sites give Cerreto Guidi a sacred and art-historical dimension that extends beyond the Medici villa.

Hilly landscape, olive oil and Palio del Cerro

The landscape around Cerreto Guidi is dominated by traditional vineyards and olive groves. Cerreto Guidi is included in the Strada dell'Olio, del Vino e dei Sapori.
