Arcille: Church Building, River Routes and Fossil Finds

Arcille offers several ways to get to know a place: through its origins and church building, through river and activity routes, through fossils and through a traditional porcini mushroom event. These topics provide different points of reference for planning your trip without reducing the area to just one experience. This allows you to balance cultural, scenic, sporting and culinary interests.

Church and Origins

Arcille emerged as a small centre during the land reform carried out by Ente Maremma. Various facilities were provided for the population, including the church and the rectory.

The parish of Madonna di Lourdes in Arcille was canonically established by episcopal decree on 1 January 1955. The church of Madonna di Lourdes in Arcille was solemnly consecrated on 23 March 1958.

Architecturally, it is a single-nave building in the Neo-Romanesque style. There are three windows on each side, along with six arches.

Walking and Cycling Routes

The Arcille–Trasubbie–Ombrone circular route passes through the wild valley of the Torrente Trasubbie to its confluence with the Ombrone River. It then follows the Ombrone back to Arcille. Those looking for river landscapes and a circuit with changing stretches of water will find a clearly defined tour profile here.

On the Arcille–Baccinello cycling route, the first, easier circuit of approximately 25 km can be ridden. A fitwalking route leads from Piazza di Arcille via Strada delle Cantinelle and back, and is approximately 8 km long.

Water Routes and Events

The approximately 8.5 km water-trekking section from Arcille to Istia d’Ombrone starts at the landing stage in the hamlet of “Le Cantinelle” near Arcille. The navigable section presents no particular difficulties and is suitable for everyone; individual passages reach no more than Grade II whitewater.

One edition of Vivifiume Ombrone in Arcille featured kayaking, rafting, trekking, fast walking and mountain biking. Vivifiume Ombrone was the tenth edition of the event. The programme therefore ranged from water-based activities to activities on land.

Fossil Evidence in Arcille

Fossil finds from Arcille offer a palaeontological perspective on the area. The first evidence of a fossil from the Monodontidae family (Cetacea, Odontoceti) in the Mediterranean Basin comes from the Pliocene sands of Arcille.

A Lower Pliocene elasmobranch assemblage of palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental significance has also been documented for Arcille. Fossil finds from Arcille include Casatia thermophila, considered the only fossil monodontid species found in Mediterranean deposits.

Porcini Mushrooms and Local Food Culture

Another local facet is represented by the Sagra del Porcino in Arcille. It reached its 44th edition; the traditional event places porcini mushrooms at the centre.
