Campagnatico: History, Nature and Cycling Routes

Campagnatico is a medieval village on a hill that drops steeply to the east towards the Ombrone Valley. The area is characterised by Mediterranean maquis and gently rolling hills cultivated with vineyards and olive groves. On the hills along the right bank of the Ombrone, holm oak forests, evergreen broadleaf vegetation and mixed stands with conifers also shape the landscape. Thus, village history, agriculturally cultivated hills and densely wooded nature come together within a compact thematic area.

Historic Sites and Local Tradition

Those interested in history and architecture will find several clearly distinct examples in Campagnatico. The fortified Rocca Aldobrandesca complex has been preserved. Pieve Vecchia was built around the year 1000 and uses the cistern of a Roman villa as its foundation. The municipality is also home to the ruins of the Monastery of San Benedetto alla Nave. Each of the three sites represents a different historical layer: fortification, religious architecture and monastic ruins.

At the annual Palio dei Ciuchi, local tradition is contested in September by the town districts of Castello, Centro, Nobile Rione Pieve and Santa Maria. The donkey race takes place in the centre of Campagnatico along Via Roma.

Campagnatico also offers two routes of different lengths for a cycling trip. The cycling tour “In bicicletta tra Campagnatico e la bassa valle dell’Ombrone” begins in Campagnatico’s small square. It is 45 kilometres long, physically demanding and technically easy. The “Grand Tour della Maremma” stage from Massa Marittima to Campagnatico is 68 kilometres long. The two distances provide a useful guideline for planning your day, without suggesting that the routes are identical in character.

Forests and Wildlife

In the Oasi Faunistica di Monte Leoni, the vegetation includes evergreen trees and shrubs, cork oak forests, chestnut forests and dense undergrowth. Among other species, wildcats and spectacled salamanders can be found there. Campagnatico’s natural side therefore offers concrete points of interest for visitors who value forest habitats and wildlife as much as medieval buildings.
