Cana between a Castle, Art and Monte Amiata
Cana lies on a hill between the Trasubbie and Trasubbino streams. At the same time, the village is situated at an elevated position on the slopes of Monte Amiata. From here, you can look out over forests and olive groves, and in some places also over the valley of the Albegna River. This combination of a historic villagescape and natural surroundings makes Cana a destination for travellers who want to combine culture and peaceful paths in a distinctive setting.
A medieval castle with a visible history
Cana presents itself as a typical medieval castle settlement. Its development followed the natural contours of the terrain around the original Rocca. The original fortifications were built by the Aldobrandeschi; some sections of the ancient walls that enclosed the castle have survived to this day. The history of the village can therefore be read directly from its layout, without Cana reducing its character to a single building.
The main square, lanes and the Medici cistern
A 17th-century Medici cistern has been preserved in Cana's main square. It collected rainwater through an elaborate pipe system connected to its central structure. The building thus points not only to the history of the village, but also to a specific historical form of water supply.
A walk through the quiet lanes leads to the Church of San Martino. Cana is characterised by a network of lanes surrounding the main square and offering views of the surrounding countryside. Those who explore the village on foot therefore experience historic traces, religious architecture and landscape not as separate themes, but along the small-scale structure of the castle settlement.
Art throughout Cana's villagescape
One of the special cultural attractions is the “LE NOZZE DI CANA” art gallery. It currently makes a large collection of paintings by the artist and writer SKIM available for viewing by appointment. In addition, Cana is enriched year after year by permanent murals, sculptures and installations. The murals include works by Ericailcane, SKIM and JodyPinge; the sculptures and installations are by Paolo Staccioli, Sarah Del Giudice and Silvano Bavia.
One specific work by Paolo Staccioli is the bronze sculpture “Il Guerriero di Cana”, which stands in Cana's castle courtyard square. In the historic surroundings of the village, you can therefore also encounter contemporary works of art. When planning your visit, it is important to distinguish between the gallery, which can be visited by appointment, and the permanently installed works.
Festivals, chestnuts and paths on Monte Amiata
The Festa Medievale takes place in Cana every year. The Sagra della Biondina is also held annually; “Biondina” is the local term for a roasted chestnut. The two festivals have different focuses and complement the historic villagescape with recurring cultural and culinary events.
Around Cana, trails suitable for excursions run through the forests of Monte Amiata. The historic fortified farm estate of Castagnolo is also located nearby; the site known as “Buca di Pietro Pinca” lies there. Cana is therefore particularly suitable for a stay during which you can explore medieval architecture, art, local festivals and the landscape at different rhythms.
