Roccalbegna: Medieval Village, Cultural Heritage and Nature

Roccalbegna is a medieval village with a distinctive right-angled street network laid out by Sienese architects at the end of the 13th century. In addition to the medieval town plan, there are churches, palazzi, the town walls and the hike to the Riserva Naturale del Pescinello.

Historic Roccalbegna and Religious Art

Roccalbegna’s preserved religious and civic heritage includes, among other sites, the Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, the Chiesa del Crocefisso, the Chiesa della Madonna del Soccorso, the Cassero with its garden, the Palazzo della Lana, the Palazzo Bichi Ruspoli, and the fully preserved town walls with the Porta di Maremma. Alongside the religious heritage, the palazzi, the Cassero garden and the town walls represent civic and fortified structures. The 1340 altarpiece and the 15th-century frescoes add further examples of religious art to this history of the village.

The Oratorio del Crocifisso now houses a museum with a picture gallery featuring works by Francesco Nasini and Sebastiano Folli in particular. Outside the Porta di Maremma, the Madonna chapel contains 15th-century frescoes. Roccalbegna is also home to an altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Child, painted by Ambrogio Lorenzetti in 1340. For those interested in culture, the focus is therefore on sacred buildings, paintings, palazzi and the town walls.

The Pietra also makes a striking impression: its tower rises above Roccalbegna and can be reached via a steep paved road followed by narrow stone steps. Access to the Pietra therefore consists of an uphill road section followed by a flight of steps.

Nature and Hiking Around Roccalbegna

Since 1998, Bosco Rocconi has been part of the provincial nature reserve Riserva Naturale Provinciale di Rocconi, as well as the SAC and SPA “Monte Labbro e Alta valle dell’Albegna”. Mount Monte Labbro is located in the immediate vicinity of Roccalbegna; Monte Faete, Monte Aquilaia and Monte Buceto are located in the area around Roccalbegna.

A hike from Roccalbegna leads to the 149-hectare Riserva Naturale del Pescinello. It starts at Piazza IV Novembre and follows a steep ascent marked with white-and-red trail signs. The protected area preserves a rugged landscape with a gorge carved out by the Albegna River, oak forests, pastures and scrubland. The hike to Pescinello includes both the steep ascent and the 45-minute return journey from Podere Pescinello to Roccalbegna.
