Mountain setting and nature south of the village

Monticello Amiata lies at an elevation of 734 metres on the road to Monte Amiata. The Poggio all’Olmo regional nature reserve is located nearby, immediately south of Monticello Amiata. The reserve’s visitor centre is located in Monticello Amiata, Località Prato Laforma. Historical traces in the town centre

The medieval fortifications of Monticello Amiata are almost completely preserved. They include the historic entrance gates Porta Monticelli and Porta San Francesco. There is also a significant old cistern beneath the main square. Together with the gates, it points to the historic structure of the village, which can be experienced directly as a distinct travel theme while walking through Monticello Amiata.

San Michele Arcangelo and the Casa Museo

The centre is dominated by the church of San Michele Arcangelo. It was rebuilt in the mid-13th century and extensively remodelled in the neoclassical style between 1815 and 1832. The church houses a panel painting by Bartolomeo Neroni (Il Riccio), created between 1535 and 1540. The building thus combines a medieval history of origin, a later neoclassical remodelling and a specifically dated work of art.

The Casa Museo documents domestic everyday life and work in a high-altitude hill village at the end of the 19th century. With authentic furniture and household objects, it reconstructs a mountain farming home from the Amiata area dating from the late 19th century. The ensemble includes a stable, a storeroom and an old animal-powered oil mill. The Casa Museo offers guided museum tours.

Chestnut groves, springs and trails

Several themed trails explore the landscape around Monticello Amiata. The Via della Castagna is a walking and excursion route through centuries-old chestnut groves in the area surrounding the village. The Sentiero Ontanelli leads through the chestnut grove of the Ontanelli estate, where the monumental tree “Castagnone” can be seen. The Via delle Fonti connects two springs in the village, while the Birimacola route continues towards Monticello.

The two nature trails, Via delle Fonti and Via della Castagna, can be visited by prior registration. This information is particularly important if you want to combine a stay with culture and walking trails and intentionally plan a visit to the Casa Museo or a themed route.

Excursion destinations with historical connections

Outside the village stands the 15th-century Oratorio della Compagnia di San Sebastiano. It preserves a painting by Manetti as well as a wooden statue of Saint Sebastian. The Santuario della Madonna di Val di Prata is also located in the immediate surroundings of Monticello Amiata. It is accessible from the Parco della Rimembranza, which lies outside the village, and can be traced back to documentary records dating from 1198.

The Festa della Castagna

The Festa della Castagna takes place in Monticello Amiata every year around the beginning of October. On this occasion, chestnut jam, roasted chestnuts and sweet polenta were prepared or offered. The event adds a specific culinary tradition to the village’s historical and landscape-related themes.
