Sasso Dʼombrone: Castle, Ombrone and Historic Trails

Sasso d'Ombrone lies near the border with the municipality of Civitella Paganico. The Ombrone River forms this border. The village combines a castle with historic trails, churches, preserved springs, riverside landscapes and its own culinary tradition. This creates a destination where history, exploration and walking trails along the Ombrone come together.

A Historic Place on the Ombrone

The small castle of Sasso d'Ombrone, with its Rocca, stood in a position overlooking the Ombrone Valley. The castle also controlled the historic Traversa dei Monti. This route connected the Grosseto area with Montalcino.

Sasso d'Ombrone is also an old grancia belonging to the Santa Maria della Scala Hospital in Siena. As early as before the year 1000, the village guarded the bridge over the Ombrone River.

Churches, Springs and Panoramas

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo contains a 15th-century crucifix of Sienese origin. The Santuario della Madonna del Soccorso was built in the 16th century and completely rebuilt in 1872.

The Antiche Fonti del Sasso are fully preserved and lie along the Sentiero del Fiume, the path from Sasso d'Ombrone to the Ombrone River. A panoramic promenade runs around the castle in the upper historic part, offering views of the hills of Montalcino and the Val d'Orcia, as well as the Ombrone Valley towards Paganico.

Walking Trails Through River Landscapes and Hills

The Sentiero del Fiume is entirely a walking trail and leads close to the Ombrone River. It includes an educational section where you can discover the local flora and fauna. The uphill educational trail La via del fiume has information boards explaining the flora along the route, including oaks, broom and hawthorn. Near the river, the trail passes a picnic area from which you can descend to the river.

Another route is offered by the Sentiero del Monastero, which connects Sasso d'Ombrone with the Monastero di Siloe and passes through forests, olive groves and vineyards.

Capitone and Local Life

Capitone, an eel prepared in various ways, is considered a typical dish of Sasso d'Ombrone. The Sagra del Capitone takes place between the historic centre and Parco Bellacosta.

Parco Comunale di Bellacosta is located at the entrance to Sasso d'Ombrone when you arrive from the bridge. The Campetto Polifunzionale offers tennis and five-a-side football; prior arrangements with the local association managing the facility are required for its use. Interactive visits to Albus Alpacas in Sasso d'Ombrone are possible only by prior reservation.

When choosing your hotel for Sasso d'Ombrone, you can consider whether you would like to link your stay mainly with the castle and panoramic promenade, the Sentiero del Fiume, the Sentiero del Monastero or Capitone.

More places for planning your trip: Monticello Amiata, Porrona, Castiglioncello Bandini.
