Montieri: Discover the Geopark, Trails and Tuscan Culture
Montieri is located in the Geoparco delle Colline Metallifere, the Tuscan Mining Geopark. The town combines marked trails and a far-reaching viewpoint with archaeological and religious heritage. Getting There and Accommodation Location
By car, you can reach Montieri via the E80 to Follonica Est and then along the SR439. If travelling by train, take the train to Follonica railway station and continue by car or bus. These two options can help you take your desired mobility into account when choosing your accommodation.

The entire municipality of Montieri is marked with CAI hiking trails. The route I sentieri dell’argento di Montieri is a route in the Tuscan Mining Geopark. An asphalt road or trekking trail leads to the Poggio di Montieri viewpoint; from there, the view extends from Monte Amiata to Corsica. The range of activities and excursions in the Montieri area includes a bike park. Guided horseback rides are offered in the area; beginners can also book introductory courses in handling horses. During the summer months, you can book guided hikes or adventure activities at the Ufficio Turistico on Piazza Gramsci.
Landscape and Protected Places to Visit
The Le Roste geosite consists of the red gorges of the Merse near the bridge connecting Montieri with Boccheggiano. Access to Le Roste is prohibited; the site can only be visited as part of a guided tour organised by the Comune di Montieri together with the Parco delle Colline Metallifere. Nearby lies the small natural lake Laghetto di Montieri, one of the few wetlands in the mining area. It is home to one of the last currently confirmed Tuscan sites of the rare aquatic plant Hottonia palustris.
Churches and Archaeological History
The Canonica di San Niccolò archaeological site preserves the remains of a church with a unique, six-petalled flower-shaped floor plan. The Chiesa di San Giacomo Apostolo is a late Romanesque church built in the 13th century, with a broad nave and a small semicircular apse. In the area around Montieri, Boccheggiano is home to the 14th-century Chiesa di San Sebastiano. The church preserves a marble sculpture of Saint Sebastian from 1650 by Bartolomeo Cennini, as well as the Salimbeni coat of arms on its travertine portal.
Festivals and Chestnut Specialties
In Montieri, the Madonna dei Castagni is celebrated every three years during the second week of September. In the municipality, you can buy products made from chestnut flour and sample chestnut confectionery and schiacce directly at the bakeries that produce them. Montieri’s chestnut product is celebrated at the Sagra della Castagna in October and December.
