Monterotondo Marittimo combines an unusual geothermal landscape with a diverse cultural heritage. The Parco delle Biancane is a geothermal area between the municipalities of Monterotondo Marittimo and Castelnuovo Val di Cecina in Tuscany. Smoking craters, white ground marked by cracks and constantly escaping steam shape the landscape. The ascending path through the park leads through clouds of steam and past noisy high-pressure steam vents, where temperatures of up to 115°C are reached. This creates a landscape experience in which geological forces become directly visible and audible.

The MUBIA, the Biancane Geomuseum, presents the development of geothermal energy in Monterotondo Marittimo, from the discovery of boric acid to the generation of electrical energy. The museum also offers a virtual journey into the depths of the Earth, where you can explore geothermal phenomena. The GeoNave enables a journey to a depth of 7 km to explore the subsoil beneath the Biancane. Together, these offerings provide different ways of approaching the subject: outside, the path leads through steam and craters, while inside, the geological connections and the use of the Earth's energy are made comprehensible.

Culture between a Castle, Literature and Sacred Art

The history of the town includes the ruins of the ancient Rocca degli Alberti castle in Monterotondo Marittimo. They date back to the 12th century and add a historical accent alongside the modern exploration of geothermal energy. Le Stanze di Renato Fucini is a storytelling museum in Monterotondo Marittimo dedicated to the Tuscan writer and his connection to the Maremma. There, suitcases mark the stages of Renato Fucini's life. When opened, they light up and reveal objects, texts or books relating to his place of origin, childhood and life events. The Santuario della Madonna del Frassine houses the famous wooden statue of the “Vergine col Bambino”, attributed to an artist of the Pisan school from the 14th century who remains unknown to this day.

It is a circular walk in the Parco delle Biancane that begins near Monterotondo Marittimo. The meeting point for the guided Anello Geotermico is at the bus stop on Viale Matteotti in Monterotondo Marittimo.

The ancient site of Miniere di Rama and the ruins of Canonica di San Nicolò a Montieri are located in the surroundings of Monterotondo Marittimo. Mount Poggio di Montieri is also in this area.
