Poggioferro: Discover Mountains, Culture and Trails

Poggioferro is a hamlet of Scansano, located at an altitude of approximately 490 m in the hills of the Albegna and Fiora valleys. The elevation refers to the hamlet itself; the trails lead through the surrounding landscape.

Nearby are Poggio Brunorio and Monte Auto, both mountains. The surrounding area also includes Poggi Alti and Poggio della Rustica, which are likewise mountains. A route from Scansano via Murci to Saturnia passes through Poggioferro and the forests of Monte Lumini. Poggioferro lies along the route between Scansano and Saturnia.

Trekking route: stream crossings, ascent and return through vineyards

A UISP trekking route starts in Poggioferro and leads through woodland and adjacent fields to the Senna stream, which must be crossed three times. It climbs approximately 2.5 kilometres to Castello di Montepò and returns along a different route through vineyards. The three crossings of the Senna come before the ascent; Castello di Montepò marks its end. The approximately 2.5 kilometres refer only to the uphill section, not to the entire loop. For day planning, the stream crossings, ascent and return through the vineyards can therefore be treated as separate sections. On a day trip, the return through the vineyards remains a final section separate from the ascent. The change from woodland and adjacent fields to vineyards makes the return through the landscape different from the outward route. Those planning breaks can consider the crossings, ascent and return as consecutive sections.

Ruins, museum and palace in the wider regional area

Near Poggioferro are Castello di Cotone, a site recorded as a ruin, and San Bruzio, another site recorded as a ruin. The wider regional area also includes the Museo di Storia Naturale della Maremma, a museum, and Palazzo Chiarini, a palace.

Chiesa della Santa Croce: history and interior features

The Chiesa della Santa Croce was mentioned as a chapel in 1729 and became a parish church in 1789. The church contains a panel by Giovanni di Paolo depicting the Madonna and Child with musical angels. The high altar features a polychrome wooden crucifix made in Tuscany in the 18th century.

The origins and funding purpose of the Sagra del Tortello

The Sagra del Tortello was established 55 years ago at the initiative of the parish and the parish priest at the time, Don Pietro Natali, to fund Poggioferro's local football team.
