Polveraia: Church, Hills and Culture in the Val d’Ombrone
Polveraia between the Hill Range and Cultural Heritage
Polveraia is located on a hill range in the Val d’Ombrone. To the north, the town opens onto the lower-lying plains of Pian d’Orneta, Sabatina and Granaione. This makes it a destination whose appeal lies particularly in its setting, the parish church of San Matteo and the historical connections in its surroundings.
At the entrance to the town stands the parish church of San Matteo. Inside, there is a 1621 travertine holy water font that was brought here from the churches of Cotone. The parish of Polveraia is the heir to the former parish in Cotone, which was relocated here in the 17th century. Those interested in smaller Italian towns, ecclesiastical architecture and local history passed down through the generations will find concrete points of interest here rather than merely a scenic backdrop.
Historical Traces around the Town
Castello di Cotone, a ruin, is located in the immediate surroundings of Polveraia. Poggio della Rustica, a mountain, is also nearby. The area around Polveraia is also home to Poggi Alti, Poggio delle Caldaie and Monte Auto; all three are designated as mountains.
Further cultural and historical destinations in the surrounding area include Rovine di Roselle, an ancient site. In the wider regional area around Polveraia are the Museo di Storia Naturale della Maremma, a museum, and Palazzo Chiarini, a palace. Culture enthusiasts will therefore find a variety of historical and cultural destinations in the immediate and wider surroundings of Polveraia.
