Porto Ercole reveals its history through fortresses, walls, gates, squares and waterfront views. For you, this creates a destination where culture, the townscape and paths by the sea can be explored from different perspectives. The old town centre, the marina and the Spanish fortifications each add their own accents – between a seafaring village, harbour panorama and routes through the landscape.

Fortresses, Walls and Far-Reaching Views

The Rocca of Porto Ercole was built in the 15th century based on a design by Vecchietta and includes several buildings from the 13th century. The wall descending from the Rocca towards the sea connects the Rocca with the Santa Barbara Bastion through an underground passage. These structures make both the long history of construction and the location between fortress and coast tangible.

Forte Filippo is a privately owned fortification built in 1558 based on a design by Giovanni Camerini. Its elongated rectangular shape, distinctive corner bastions and deep moat are characteristic features. Forte Stella was built by the Spanish around the second half of the 16th century and is located near Porto Ercole in the municipality of Monte Argentario. From Forte Stella, the view extends along the coast from southern Argentario to the headland of Capo Linaro near Civitavecchia.

Old Town Centre and Harbour

The Porta Pisana and its clock tower form the entrance to Porto Ercole’s old town centre. The Chiesa di Sant'Erasmo stands at the highest point of Porto Ercole’s old seafaring village. The Governor’s Palace on Santa Barbara Square offers an expansive view of Porto Ercole harbour. The marina is home to a picturesque waterfront promenade lined with fishermen’s houses. If you would like to explore the townscape step by step, this is where striking buildings, a historic square and Porto Ercole’s maritime side come together.

Paths with Historical Connections

The Anello dei 4 forti circular route leads from Porto Ercole to the Spanish fortresses and runs via Cala Galera, the Rocca and Le Viste. This route therefore connects several sites from the history of the fortifications in a sequence that takes in Porto Ercole and its surroundings as a whole. The Percorso del Caravaggio is a hiking trail dedicated to Caravaggio’s final days in Porto Ercole. Porto Ercole is associated with Caravaggio’s death in 1610. Alongside the theme of the fortresses, this offers you a second historical perspective closely connected with the town.

Coast, Cycling Route and Botanical Garden

The surroundings can also be explored by bicycle on the Giro del Monte e le Rocche Spagnole dell’Argentario cycling route: the Giro del Monte e le Rocche Spagnole dell’Argentario cycling route reaches Cala Galera and the first houses of Porto Ercole. From the beach, there is a view of the Tombolo della Feniglia and Forte Filippo. The Orto Botanico Corsini extends over more than 7 hectares and contains more than 1,300 plants from 150 different species. These varied destinations give your stay a range of themes, from coastal views and cycling routes to fortress landscapes and botanical diversity.
