Monte Argentario – between coast, fortresses and art

Monte Argentario combines coastal landscapes with cultural history and a selection of beaches, fortresses and excursion destinations. Cultural history between churches, walls and fortresses

The Santuario della Presentazione complex is the mother house of the Congregation of the Passionists and comprises a convent area and a church. Construction began in 1733 and was completed in 1737.

The historic center of Porto Ercole is surrounded by a city wall. Porta Senese is the main entrance to the historic center and, at the same time, an outstanding example of 15th-century Gothic architecture. The Chiesa di Sant’Erasmo was built by the Sienese in the 15th century and expanded in later centuries. The now-deconsecrated Chiesa-ospedale di Santa Croce is associated with Caravaggio’s final days.

Beaches and botanical diversity

The beaches differ in terms of their location: Cala del Gesso and Tantulli Ulisse are beaches in the vicinity of Monte Argentario. Le Cannelle and Braccio are beaches in the Monte Argentario area. Cala Galera has a shallow sandy beach and is considered very accessible; it offers both a free beach and bathing establishments.

The Orto Botanico Corsini adds a botanical perspective to this range of attractions. It extends over more than 7 hectares and contains more than 1,300 plants from over 150 different species. There are also collections of orchids and succulents.
