Semproniano combines sacred art, historical evidence, mineralogy and protected landscapes. The Chiesa di Santa Croce and Pieve dei Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio preserve different traces of ecclesiastical furnishings, while the Rocca Aldobrandesca recalls the town’s history of defence. The Museo Mineralogico and the Rocconi nature reserve add two further themes that shape the town and its wider surroundings. The range extends from individual furnishings to a valley with rock walls, rivers and caves.

Churches and Fortress History

The Chiesa di Santa Croce houses a wooden crucifix dating from the 12th or 13th century. The work is a specific element of Semproniano’s sacred furnishings.

The present appearance of the Pieve dei Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio is the result of restorations carried out in 1579. At the same time, the Pieve preserves remnants of 13th-century decorative elements, including rosette panels, two capitals and a holy water stoup.

Construction of Semproniano’s Rocca Aldobrandesca began in the mid-9th century and at that time served a defensive purpose. Today, only a few ruins of the complex remain.

Rocconi and the Upper Albegna Valley

The Rocconi nature reserve lies within the municipalities of Semproniano and Roccalbegna. The Bosco dei Rocconi nature reserve extends through the upper Albegna Valley and likewise concerns the municipalities of Semproniano and Roccalbegna. Massive limestone walls, the Albegna and Rigo rivers, and caves such as the Crepaccio di Rocconi are among its defining features.

The two references to Rocconi thus encompass both the municipal location and the landscape of the upper Albegna Valley. The wider regional surroundings of Semproniano also include several mountains as well as an ancient site, ruins and a monastery.

Mineralogy as a Distinct Focus

The Museo Mineralogico di Semproniano displays a collection of more than 300 mineral specimens from around the world, particularly from the region and from Italy. The museum is the only museum institution in the Parco Museo delle Miniere dell'Amiata devoted entirely to mineralogy.

The admission price for the Museo Mineralogico di Semproniano includes a guided tour. The museum visit therefore includes not only the minerals on display but also this explicitly provided component.

Mountains and Historical Sites in the Wider Surroundings

Monte Faete is a mountain in the wider regional surroundings of Semproniano. Monte Calvo, Monte Rosso and Monte Rotondo are also mountains in the wider regional surroundings of Semproniano. With these four mountains, the landscape extends beyond Semproniano into the wider regional surroundings.
