Colognole combines natural landscapes, historic buildings, sacred heritage and destinations in the surrounding area. Directly outside the settlement of Colognole, in the southwestern part of the municipality of Collesalvetti, lies the local protected area of particular interest known as “Sorgenti di Colognole”. At the springs, a holm oak forest surrounds the structures of the Colognole Aqueduct. The natural setting is not only about the forest: the aqueduct adds a built element.

Hiking at the Aqueduct

The trail at the Colognole Aqueduct follows CAI trails 199, 125, 125P and 119. A guided hike to the aqueduct is an easy circular route in the Colognole area. It leads through Mediterranean maquis and between oaks and centuries-old holm oaks. Those interested in historic waterworks can incorporate the aqueduct into a route through maquis and oak woodland. The easy circular route connects the destination with the natural landscape of Colognole.

Church and Sacred Art

The Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo is located at Piazza Unione 4 in Colognole. On feast days, a service is held there at 9:30 a.m. The Museo diocesano houses a reliquary of Santa Croce from this church. The furnishings of Santi Pietro e Paolo also include a chalice made of silver-plated and gold-plated metal, commissioned in 1599 by the Pisan nobleman Giulio Gualandi. Alongside the natural landscape, these specific examples give the village a sacred and historic dimension.

Castles, Museum and Beaches in the Surrounding Area

Several different destinations can be found around Colognole. Castello Sonnino, Castel Boccale and Casini of Ardenza are castles in the area around Colognole. The Museo Mascagnano is represented there as a museum. For days by the sea, Cala del Leone, Spiaggia di Calignaia and Spiaggia per Cani are located near the village; all three are beaches. The Acquario di Livorno, a zoo, is also located in the surrounding area. For those interested in culture, Castello Sonnino, Castel Boccale, Casini of Ardenza and the Museo Mascagnano complement the aqueduct and church with additional specific destinations. The range of possible excursions thus extends from buildings and musical history to coastal destinations and animal experiences.

Local Festival Calendar

The Sagra del Cinghiale in Colognole had reached its 34th edition in 2024; in 2026, it took place at the Area Polivalente “Carlo Lenzi” in Colognole from July 30 to August 2 and from August 5 to August 9, 2026. The two periods fall within the same calendar year and are separated by a short interruption. Planning for the 2026 festival visit therefore focuses on late July and early August.
