Livorno between the waterfront promenade and city history

Livorno’s waterfront area is characterised by bridges, canals and old palaces reflected in the calm water. At the western end of Piazzale Mascagni, Terrazza Mascagni is one of the most significant settings along Livorno’s urban waterfront promenade. For planning your trip, this part of the city offers an initial focus on maritime landscapes, public space and architecture.

Waterfront promenade and art collections

The Acquario di Livorno is located on the waterfront promenade next to Terrazza Mascagni. It has 32 tanks with more than 1,700 animals from 300 different species. The Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori in Villa Mimbelli provides an art-historical highlight. It mainly displays paintings from the mid-19th century through the 1940s, including important groups of works by artists from Livorno.

Villa Mimbelli was commissioned by Francesco Mimbelli and inaugurated in 1868. Many of its original frescoes and decorations have been preserved. As a result, the site combines the history of the building with the painting that is now the focus of its rooms.

Fortresses, theatres and city history

Fortezza Vecchia has a medieval core around which Livorno’s urban fabric developed. Today, it serves as a special venue for numerous events in art, music and film. Museo della Città opened in 2018 and is part of the Polo Culturale Bottini dell’Olio cultural centre in Livorno. Its collections include Etruscan and Roman archaeological finds, mosaics, sculptures, medieval documents, frescoes, coins and memorabilia from the Risorgimento.

Teatro Carlo Goldoni is also one of the city’s prominent cultural venues. It is the only large city theatre in Livorno to have survived the bombings of the Second World War. Teatro Carlo Goldoni also features an exhibition tour dedicated to Pietro Mascagni. Fortezza Nuova complements these historic sites with events within its old walls; every year, it hosts art exhibitions, concerts and performances, among other events.

Natural sciences, park and street art

The central complex of the Museo di Storia Naturale del Mediterraneo houses five exhibition areas and a planetarium. The museum dedicates around 6,000 m² to the natural sciences; the complex includes, among other things, a botanical garden, a historic park, a Specola, storage collections, and research and training laboratories. The outdoor area includes a section for aromatic plants and an ethnobotanical garden with old fruit varieties. Fortezza Nuova is also a public park completely surrounded by the sea, offering panoramic views of the canals of the Venezia and Pontino districts as well as the adjacent Piazza della Repubblica.

For active exploration, the Livorno Street Art City route is available; it can be completed by bicycle in about an hour. Santuario di Montenero can be reached from Livorno’s main railway station by bus route 2 to Piazza delle Carrozze and then by funicular. In culinary terms, Cacciucco is regarded as a tradition with a distinctive character that emerged from a complex and diverse combination of different forms of knowledge, flavours and identities. When choosing a hotel in Livorno, you can therefore first decide whether your stay should focus more on the waterfront promenade and aquarium, museums and fortresses, or natural sciences, the park and street art.
