Cardoso: Monte Gragno, Sentiero 111 and Local History

Cardoso on the Southern Slope of Monte Gragno

Cardoso lies on the southern slope of Monte Gragno. From here, there are views of Monte Penna and the Apennines. Its hillside location on Monte Gragno gives the village a distinctive mountain landscape. At the same time, the village’s history dates back to the Middle Ages: Cardoso was first mentioned in a document in 996. Monte Penna appears not only in the panorama, but also along the route of the Sentiero 111.

The Sentiero 111 and the Tana di Casteltendine

For hiking and landscape experiences, the Sentiero 111 begins in Cardoso and leads to San Luigi. A marked path to the Tana di Casteltendine branches off from the Sentiero 111 immediately after the turnoff for the Sentiero 136 on the eastern slopes of Monte Penna. Anyone planning this section of the route should use the turnoff for the Sentiero 136 as a reference point along the Sentiero 111. For hikers, the order is therefore particularly important: first comes the turnoff for the Sentiero 136 along the route, and immediately afterward the marked path to the Tana di Casteltendine branches off. The path to the Tana therefore begins on the eastern slopes of Monte Penna, not at the starting point of the Sentiero 111 in Cardoso.

Etruscan Traces at the Tana

The Tana di Casteltendine also has a special cultural and historical significance. Bronze finds of Etruscan origin were discovered there, probably associated with a water cult. For those interested in culture, the marked path here connects with a specific archaeological site. In addition to its location on the eastern slopes of Monte Penna, the Tana therefore also represents an Etruscan trace in the history of the area.

Ruins, Church and Bell Tower

Ruins with two surviving gates are all that remain of Cardoso’s old castle. A 13th-century bell tower stands beside the castle ruins. Several sections of wall have been preserved around the Church of San Genesio. The church itself was probably founded in 1217. However, extensive alterations in the 18th century largely erased its medieval features both inside and out. Thus, the surviving remains of the castle stand beside the bell tower, while the sections of wall around San Genesio recall the former buildings. Outside Cardoso, there is also the 18th-century Oratorio di San Doroteo. The village’s history therefore includes both the ruins of the old castle and ecclesiastical buildings from different centuries.

In August, impressive religious events take place in the districts of Cardoso and Verni. Alongside the historic buildings, August therefore adds another cultural aspect to Cardoso and Verni.

There is a large parking area with panoramic views at the end of the road near Cardoso. Those looking for panoramic views will find them at the parking area at the end of the road; the Sentiero 111, on the other hand, begins in Cardoso.
