Gallicano: Culture, Mountains and Living Traditions

Gallicano combines Italian mountain landscapes, historic townscapes and living traditions. The town lies at the foot of Monte Pania, between very green, wooded valleys. Gallicano and its hamlets include typical Garfagnana villages that have remained almost unchanged. The area where Gallicano is located has been a borderland since the Middle Ages.

Landscapes, Views and Routes

The “Chieva” trail offers views of Pania della Croce and Monte Forato. A car and motorcycle tour from Gallicano to the Grotta del Vento follows the Turrite stream. In the circular hike “Anello dell’Eremo,” scheduled for October 12, 2025, an approximately 12 km route between Gallicano and the Eremo di Calomini led through Crocette, Panicaglia and Calomini.

History, Buildings and Art

Gallicano’s Palazzo Comunale served in the Middle Ages as a guardhouse protecting the entrance to the castle. Under its loggia is a polychrome terracotta roundel of the Madonna and Child, attributed to the Della Robbia school and dated to the end of the 15th century. The palazzo can be reached on foot from one of the two car parks in the town; the car parks are approximately 100 metres from the building. Another distinctive structure is the Arco di Francesco V, a small building made of stone and bricks. At the same time, it is a canal bridge with high Gothic pointed arches, intended to help solve the drought problem during certain seasons. The Church of San Pietro in Trassilico also contains a painting made by Simone Carretta in the 16th century.

Crafts, Flavours and Festivals

Gallicano has a craft tradition of wrought iron and pietra serena. It was encouraged by the abundance of water in the mountain streams, as well as by the presence of mines and quarries. A local speciality is Focaccia leva, a product made exclusively in Gallicano. The “Festa della focaccia leva” takes place every year in Gallicano’s historic centre on the Sunday after Ferragosto.

The Palio di San Jacopo was officially inaugurated in 1972; that year saw the first actual competition between the town districts, featuring allegorical floats. The Palio takes place on July 25, the feast day of Gallicano’s patron saint, as well as on the preceding Saturday. The Fiaccolata Natalizia is an annual torchlight procession in Gallicano, attended each year by thousands of people from across Tuscany. It began in 1980 as a fundraiser for poor people and cancer research. Gallicano’s Christmas folklore also includes the “Sacra rappresentazione e strage degli innocenti,” a form of popular theatre between the sacred and the secular. During the “Befanata di questua,” people sing at residents’ front doors to receive gifts.
