Compignano on the hill

Compignano is situated at the top of a hill amid holm oak and chestnut forests. Its elevated location and the two types of forest give the village a distinct landscape character. For orientation, the road over Monte Quiesa towards Lucca is also important: Compignano can be reached via this road.

Church and remembrance

The Church of San Frediano was first mentioned in 1260 in the assessment registers of the Diocese of Lucca. It has Romanesque origins and stands 200 metres from Villa Baldini. For visitors interested in culture, this site combines a precisely dated historical reference with Romanesque architectural history and proximity to a villa.

A memorial stone in the forest commemorates twelve civilians murdered by German soldiers on 2 September 1944. Alongside the church, this memorial site is therefore also part of Compignano’s historical character.

Paolina Bonaparte spent around one hundred days of her “golden” captivity at Villa Baldini in Compignano, from 3 March to 5 June 1815. This stay adds a precisely dated personal reference from 1815 to the history of the church and architecture.
