Massarosa between Romanesque Art, Nature and Regional Cuisine

Massarosa combines sacred art, protected nature, museums in the surrounding area and regional cuisine with its own festive specialties. Specific points of interest include the Romanesque church in Bargecchia, the marble triptych in Pieve a Elici, Villa Baldini in Campignano and the Riserva Naturale del Chiarone nature reserve.

Church, Works of Art and Villa Baldini

In Bargecchia stands the Romanesque church Chiesa romanica di S. Martino di Bargecchia. It was built at the beginning of the 13th century. The present-day church contains polyptychs from the 14th and 15th centuries.

Pieve a Elici is also home to a marble triptych depicting the Madonna and Child, Saint Pantaleon and Saint John the Baptist.

Villa Baldini is located in Campignano and was inhabited by Paolina Bonaparte. The Villa Orlandi palace is also located in the immediate vicinity of Massarosa.

Wetland with Wooden Boardwalk and Level Path

The Riserva Naturale del Chiarone nature reserve has an approximately 800-metre-long wooden boardwalk. It is followed by a level path through a small wetland woodland. When planning a walk at Chiarone, the approximately 800 metres of wooden boardwalk and the subsequent level path through the small wetland woodland can be taken into account separately in the day’s itinerary. Those planning the timing of the route can first allow for the boardwalk section with its approximate length and then factor in the connecting level path. The approximately 800 metres apply to the wooden boardwalk and not automatically to the entire path through the natural area. At Chiarone, two different sections of path therefore follow one another: the wooden boardwalk and the level route through the woodland. This sequence can be used as a compact plan for a walk in the nature reserve.

There is a tourist information point at Piazza Taddei in Massarosa. Another tourist information point is located in the Museo Massaciuccoli.

Festive Specialties from Bozzano and Massarosa

Pupporina is a traditional sweet from Bozzano, prepared every year on the evening of 24 August to celebrate Saint Bartholomew.

Tortello, also known as Tordello in this area, is a hearty filled pasta from Massarosa and is typical of festive occasions.

The Museo civici Villa Paolina Bonaparte and the Museo archeologico di Camaiore museums are located in the surroundings of Massarosa. The Museo del Carnevale di Viareggio is also located in the surrounding area.
