Corsanico: History, Trails and Regional Cuisine

Corsanico is one of the oldest settlements in Montignoso and one of the municipality’s historic hilltop centres.

Corsanico: local history, name origins and local tradition

The name Corsanico is attributed to Ligurian-Apuan or pre-Roman roots. A local tradition also tells that corsairs who landed on the coast and ventured inland founded a village called Corsanico. This account gives the place name a maritime interpretive framework without losing its character as a tradition.

Pasquilio: CAI trails, elevation and remembrance

For trails and points of elevation, Pasquilio in the surrounding area comes into focus. CAI Trail 140 starts there; CAI Trail 33 also starts in Pasquilio and leads to Arni in the upper Versilia. Pasquilio lies at an altitude of around 800 metres, and from there the panoramic view extends from the mountains to the sea. When planning a trip with Pasquilio as a starting point, CAI Trail 140 and CAI Trail 33, which leads to Arni in the upper Versilia, can be considered separately.

CAI Trail 33 runs via the Foce di Campaccio and the ridge of Monte Folgorito. The Gothic Line ran along this ridge; a monument there commemorates the resistance. As a result, the trail has a specific historical dimension of remembrance in addition to its connection with the landscape.

Landscape, protected areas and water management in Montignoso

The landscape in the surrounding area includes Lago di Porta, which has been designated an area of local conservation interest since 1998. In addition, part of the protected area of Parco delle Apuane lies within the municipality of Montignoso. Recurrent flooding originating from Corsanico led to the construction of the first water-management structures. The landscape extends from the Versilia coast to the summit of Pasquilio and combines conservation and water-management aspects with the history of the settlement.

Regional cuisine as part of the character of the area

The surrounding area also has local culinary traditions. Pane Marocco is made from corn flour with a proportion of wheat flour, as well as oil, black olives and chilli peppers. Torta Putta is a spicy, savoury rice tart seasoned with plenty of pepper and Pecorino. These two spicy specialities complement the cultural and landscape character of the area. The two specialities also differ in their base: Pane Marocco is prepared with a corn-flour base and a proportion of wheat flour, while Torta Putta is a rice tart seasoned with pepper and Pecorino.
