Fiano Pescaglia: Culture, Chestnuts and the Apuan Alps

The area’s historical depth begins at Buca delle Fate: excavations provide sufficient evidence that the Pescaglia area was inhabited during the Neolithic period, approximately between 5000 and 6000 BC. Part of its artisanal history is the Ferriera Galgani, which was already operating in Pescaglia from the 16th century onward. Pescaglia has a tradition of ironworking for producing tools for the forest, fields and rural work. The Fucina del Fabbro della Val Pedogna has been documented for more than 70 years; its historic artisanal heritage includes pennati, knives and other objects that once belonged to everyday life in the countryside. The two artisanal connections therefore differ above all in their chronological classification.

Religious architecture and theatre also add their own distinctive features. The Pieve di San Giovanni Battista a Monsagrati can be traced back to the Lombard period. Following extensive restoration, the Teatrino di Vetriano presents comedies, operas and events. The pieve is historically associated with Monsagrati, while the theatre programme is associated with Vetriano.

Another way in is through the chestnut. The Museo del Castagno focuses on the collection, drying, processing and use of chestnuts as food. In Colognora di Pescaglia, the Mondine nel Borgo Antico event celebrates chestnuts, their products and rural culture. On the first Sunday in October, the Festa della Zucca takes place in Piegaio.
