Minucciano is a suitable choice if you would like to combine mountain landscapes, hiking trails and regional history in a single trip. A large part of the municipality lies within the Parco Regionale delle Alpi Apuane. As a result, natural experiences, historic sites and local traditions come together here.
Mountain landscapes, quarries and Lago di Gramolazzo
The Parco Regionale delle Alpi Apuane, where the municipality of Minucciano is located, extends between Garfagnana and Versilia over approximately 2,000 hectares. The park includes a variety of mountain and hill landscapes as well as renowned quarries for white marble, from which the famous Carrara marble is extracted. The Lago di Gramolazzo is also located in the Minucciano area. The artificial lake is fed by the Acqua Bianca stream and adds to the area's scenic diversity.
Hiking trails through varied landscapes
If you would like to choose your excursions based on the landscape and the character of the route, the established trails offer a range of options. Sentiero CAI 36 begins south of Gorfigliano and follows the marble road to the quarries of Cave della Focolaccia. Sentiero CAI 181 is approximately 12 km long and connects Pieve San Lorenzo with the Apuan Alps; the starting point can be reached by train. From its starting point to Foce Rifogliola, Sentiero CAI 189 first passes through the broad Serchio Valley and then through the hilly LocalitĂ Mandria, with its chestnut forest. In Minucciano, there are also scenic hiking trails through forests crossed by clear streams.
Historic sites around Minucciano
The Eremo della Beata Vergine del Soccorso is located approximately 2 km from Minucciano on a hill and can be reached by road from the town center towards Pieve San Lorenzo. The Eremo originally served as a hospice for pilgrims and travelers; the associated brotherhood was founded in 1555. The medieval Ospitale di Tea also reflects the area's historic connection with travel: it offered shelter and assistance to travelers and pilgrims. The Ospitale stood on the Via del Volto Santo, a branch of the Via Francigena that connected Lunigiana and Garfagnana. Today, the restored building is freely accessible via a wooden footbridge with numerous explanatory panels.
Culture, tradition and regional cuisine
The Torre di Minucciano is part of the castle of Minucciano, which was partially destroyed by the 1837 earthquake. The Pieve di San Lorenzo di Vinacciara is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture in the municipality of Minucciano. At the Museo dell’Identità dell’Alta Garfagnana “Olimpio Cammelli”, free guided tours can be arranged for tourists and small groups by reservation. A special local tradition is the Natalecci of Gorfigliano: on Christmas Eve, the different districts compete to light the largest fire. Regional dishes include Ciacci or Cian, flatbread-like dishes prepared using the characteristic implements known as Testi and usually eaten with ricotta.
