Palagnana at the Foot of Monte Croce
Palagnana lies at the foot of the 1,314-metre-high Monte Croce. Its location connects the village with a mountain landscape where hiking trails, meadows and historical connections meet. Palagnana is a starting point for hikes on Monte Croce. This makes it a destination where a climb into the mountains can be combined with observing nature and gaining insights into local history.
Hiking Trails with Different Landscape Features
Several routes focus on different aspects. CAI Trail 135 runs via Il Termine di Palagnana, also known as Colle delle Baldorie, to the Pioppo di Palagnana. CAI Trail 113 connects Foce del Pallone and Alto Matanna with Palagnana. Trail No. 108 leads from Foce delle Porchette past Le Scalette to the meadows of Monte Croce. Il Termine di Palagnana and Colle delle Baldorie refer to the same point along the route of CAI Trail 135.
CAI Trail 137 includes a short secured section. From Palagnana, a CAI trail also leads to a via ferrata dedicated to Renato Salvatori. In the area around Palagnana, this via ferrata follows the ridge to the southern summit of Monte Forato. The trail network around Palagnana includes connections to villages and terrain features, as well as a short secured section and a ridge route to the southern summit of Monte Forato.
Spring Blossoms in the Meadows of Monte Croce
In spring, yellow daffodils, asphodels and wild orchids bloom in the meadows of Monte Croce. Trail 108 leads to these meadows; an old mule track also leads from Palagnana via several secluded houses to the meadows at the eastern foot of Monte Croce. The combination of trail and blossoms makes this landscape interesting for hikers who want to experience the mountain not only through its summits, but also through its plant life. The two access routes differ geographically: Trail No. 108 comes from Foce delle Porchette via Le Scalette, while the old mule track leads from Palagnana via several secluded houses. In spring, the plant life in the meadows gives this mountain landscape a seasonal focus.
Church, Feast Day and Historic Trails
Palagnana's history is also reflected in its older connections. An old mule track once connected Stazzema and Palagnana. The churches in Palagnana include the Church of S. Anna. The Feast of S. Giovanni is celebrated every year on 29 August. The historic mule track belongs to the area's former trail history, while the feast has a recurring annual date.
The Da Ge’ restaurant was a historic meeting place for the shepherds of Alpe della Grotta. It has a history spanning more than a hundred years.
