Retignano: Monte Alto, Hiking Trails and Local History

Retignano lies at the foot of Monte Alto and is the first village reached when ascending the road to Arni. From Retignano, it is possible to overlook almost the entire Stazzemese Valley. This makes the village an interesting destination for a trip combining mountain landscapes, hiking and local history.

The Gordici area lies on Monte Alto and is a karst landscape with numerous caves and sinkholes. It is located along the Retignano hiking route and makes the character of the landscape tangible for hikers as well. The Volegno–Retignano hiking route also passes the Grotte bianche, which are considered former breccia quarries. The trail initially leads through a forest, later becomes a mule track and then reaches the village. In this way, the route connects forest, mule track and characteristic karst formations in a clear sequence.

Hiking routes with different starting points

Another route is the Retignano–Passo dell'Alpino–Rifugio del Freo loop trail. It starts at the church in Retignano; trail 123 begins there. The routes each connect the village with a landscape in which Monte Alto and its geological formations play an important role.

Local History and San Pietro Apostolo

Retignano reveals its history through several dated milestones. The place name Retignano is first documented in a document dated 31 August 855 in the archiepiscopal archive of Lucca. In 932, the village of Ratignano and its chapel were donated to Lucca Cathedral. Retignano was already the site of a Ligurian-Apuan village. San Pietro Apostolo may have been built before the 8th century. The bell tower of San Pietro Apostolo was built in 1616; San Pietro Apostolo also houses a silver processional cross from the 15th century. For those interested in cultural history, this is a place where early local history, sacred architecture and a preserved religious object come together.

Festivals between Tradition and Regional Cuisine

The festivals also give a stay a specific time frame. The traditional “Gesù Morto” Luminaria takes place in Retignano every Good Friday once every three years. The Sagra del Tordello takes place every year from 29 June to 2 July. From 7 p.m., tordelli, grilled dishes and desserts are served; the festival also includes singing competitions and live orchestras. For local orientation, Provincial Roads 9 and 10 pass through Ruosina, Retignano, Levigliani and Terrinca.
