Fortress and sacred art

If you would like to discover an Italian place with a historical background and varied landscapes, Ripafratta brings together several distinct features: the Rocca di Ripafratta, the Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, paths through the village and waterways along the Serchio. This makes it possible to plan a stay combining culture, activity and careful observation of the surrounding area.

Above the village, the Rocca di Ripafratta stands on Colle Vergario and is also known as the Rocca di San Paolino. It is a medieval military fortress. The Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo is also significant to the history of the village: it was built between 1854 and 1857 in place of an older Romanesque parish church that had been severely damaged by the 1846 earthquake.

The Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo houses a wooden statue of the Madonna di Rupecava. The work is attributed to Andrea Pisano and dated to 1340. Together with the Rocca, the church thus offers a cultural perspective on Ripafratta that connects different periods and forms of sacred and military architecture.

Trails and the Festa della Rocca

Ripafratta offers several different routes for hiking and cycling excursions. The shorter CAI-RET Trail 105 starts in the village. The Puccini cycling and walking route passes through Ripafratta and from there leads in one direction to Lago di Massaciuccoli and Torre Del Lago Puccini (LU). In the other direction, after a short stretch on the regular road in the village centre, it follows the banks of the Serchio to Pontasserchio (PI).

A cultural event is the Festa della Rocca, which has been held in Ripafratta since 2002 and currently takes place every year on the second weekend of September. The festival includes guided tours of the Rocca and through the village, walks, trekking, rafting on the river, archery, cycling excursions, yoga in the forest and horseback riding. Depending on your personal interests, you can combine history, activity and the landscape in different ways.

Waterways around Ripafratta

The village’s connections with the water are visible at several distinct points. The Steccaia is an old artificial barrier in the Serchio near Ripafratta, below the bridge connecting Ripafratta with the village of Filettole. The Fosso del Mulino begins in Ripafratta and runs beneath the village. The Ozzeri Canal lies between the Serchio and Ripafratta and flows into the Serchio downstream from the village.

Getting there and choosing where to stay

Ripafratta railway station is available for arriving by train. It is served by Trenitalia regional trains on the Pisa–Lucca–Aulla route. In addition, Ripafratta is connected by bus to Pisa via urban route 60 and to Lucca via urban route 67. If you are considering a hotel in the village as a base, these connections are as relevant as the paths that begin in Ripafratta or pass through it.

Ripafratta is therefore suitable for travel planning in which a small village is viewed not only as a place to stay, but also as a base for exploring the fortress, church, river landscapes and excursions. You can focus your stay on culture, include CAI-RET Trail 105 or the Puccini Route, and incorporate travel by regional train or bus into your plans.
