San Giuliano Terme combines the thermal experiences of Bagni di Pisa with villas, churches, archaeology, wine and paths leading to special places. This gives you a diverse destination: you can give different weight to cultural heritage, relaxation and active routes depending on the focus of your trip. When choosing a hotel in San Giuliano Terme, these themes can help structure your plans – from thermal baths and architectural history to regional products and a spiritual destination.

Villas, churches and archaeology

The villa system of San Giuliano Terme emerged from the 16th century onwards in the foothills of the Monti Pisani and represents the expression of the Pisan aristocracy. The Pieve di San Marco in Rigoli has a three-nave layout and preserves an original baptismal font from the Lombard period, dating from the 8th or 9th century. The rectangular font was carved from a single block of marble. Villa Roncioni has a garden belonging to a villa from the late 15th century; the villa also includes a neo-Gothic bigattiera with facilities for silk spinning.

The costume collection of the Fondazione Cerratelli is on display for visitors at Villa Roncioni. The Fondazione Cerratelli holds more than 25,000 historic theatrical costumes. At Monte Castellare, the archaeological site preserves the remains of an Etruscan-medieval settlement. Finds from the excavations can be seen in a permanent exhibition at San Giuliano Terme railway station. The paths on Monte Castellare connect various points of interest, including the remains of the villa of Sigismondo de Bosniaski from 1870. Monte Castellare is also home to the Giardino dei Profumi, a garden with aromatic and medicinal plants.

Thermal baths, wine and local festivals

Bagni di Pisa has an outdoor thermal pool on the terrace of Bagni di Ponente, overlooking the park’s greenery. The wellness centre at Bagni di Pisa includes cosmetic treatments, a sauna and a Turkish bath in the famous underground caves. At Bagni di Vino, visitors can meet wine producers from the provinces of Pisa, Lucca and Massa Carrara and taste quality wines paired with culinary offerings from local businesses. The Strada dell’Olio dei Monti Pisani passes through San Giuliano Terme and offers the opportunity to taste IGP-designated olive oil along the route. Bagni di Luce is an annual festival in San Giuliano Terme held in honour of Saint Bartholomew, the patron saint of the thermal town.

Eremo di Rupecava and Route 00

The Eremo di Rupecava was built around natural caves; over the centuries, a church and two monastery buildings were added. It was consecrated as a hermitage in 1214. The recommended route on foot or by bicycle begins in Ripafratta and follows Route 00. The Eremo di Rupecava can be reached by car, on foot or by bicycle, but it is not accessible.
