Sillano: Churches, History and Nature Reserve

Sillano is a destination for anyone who does not want to separate historical traces from the landscape. In the town, churches with preserved architectural elements, a medieval transport history and a traditional festival tradition meet an environment with a nature reserve, lake and mountains. This makes it possible to plan your stay around culture, nature or a combination of both.

Churches and Transport History

In the Middle Ages, the village of Sillano was a strategic transport link. For a long time, Sillano was one of the few passes connecting central Italy with northern Italy. This historical role can be seen in several religious buildings. The Chiesa del Carmine is the second-oldest church in Sillano Giuncugnano. Construction work on the oratory of the Chiesa del Carmine began on 26 March 1580. The present building preserves almost all of its original sandstone architectural elements. These include cornerstones, cornices, door and window surrounds, and lintels.

The Chiesa della Madonna del Ponte also recounts a special local tradition. It was built at the place where, according to tradition, a painting of the Madonna with San Nicolao and San Biagio shed tears for several days on 6 August 1730. The people of Sillano completed the building within just three years. Another historical trace can be found inside the church of S. Bartolomeo in Sillano: an ancient Latin inscription is still visible there.

Festival Tradition in Sillano

The Fiera di Sant’Antonio includes a procession through the streets of Sillano. The Fiera di Sant’Antonio takes place in Sillano on the Sunday after the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua on 13 June. The festival thus combines a clearly defined date with a public connection to the town. Anyone interested in local traditions will find another way here to engage with Sillano’s history and community character.

Nature, Lake and Mountains in the Surrounding Area

The landscape around Sillano extends into the Parco dell’Orecchiella. The protected nature reserve covers, among other municipalities, Piazza al Serchio, San Romano, Sillano and Villa Collemandina. The area around Sillano also includes Lago di Vicaglia, located on the municipal road connecting Sillano with the Parco dell’Orecchiella. The lake has steep shores and is surrounded by well-maintained chestnut forests.

Lago di Vicaglia is a fishing destination. Its waters are classified as salmonid waters, and brown trout are caught there. The mountain landscape can also be clearly identified: the summit of Monte Posola is located in the vicinity of Sillano. The mountains Monte Tondo, Monte Sillano and Monte Ischia are located in the area around Sillano.

Cultural Destinations in the Wider Region

Beyond the churches and historical traces in the town, several cultural destinations are located in the wider region around Sillano. These include the Cava Museo museum, the Palazzo Cybo Malaspina palace, the Galleria d'Arte "Il Borgo" museum and the Palazzo Binelli palace. Those wishing to make their stay more culturally diverse can note these museums and palaces as independent regional destinations.

When choosing a hotel or other accommodation, you can decide on the focus of your stay: religious buildings, the inscription and festival tradition in the town, the nature reserve, lake and mountains in the surrounding area, or museums and palaces in the wider region. This allows accommodation planning to be tailored to personal interests and connects Sillano’s history with its landscape.
