Codiponte combines impressive buildings with traces of former fortifications and a diverse landscape. The Pieve di Codiponte, the Codiponte Bridge and the Borgo di Codiponte are at the heart of an exploration where sacred architecture, local history and the mountain world meet in a variety of different forms.

Sacred Architecture and Medieval Details

The Pieve di Codiponte has a Latin basilica layout with three naves. They are separated by columns with capitals dating from the 12th century. Their surfaces are decorated with symbolic and theological representations, meaning that the architecture deserves attention not only for its clear structure but also for the details of the capitals.

The Pieve di Codiponte also contains a pre-Romanesque, hexagonal baptismal font dating from the 8th century. Together with the basilica layout and the capitals, it provides a concentrated insight into different periods of sacred design. For visitors interested in architecture and history, the appeal therefore lies in the immediately visible forms, materials and pictorial motifs.

The Borgo di Codiponte and Its Castle Ruins

The upper part of the Borgo di Codiponte is fortified and preserves the ruins of a castle. The castle ruins can be reached from the lower part of the village. This makes it possible to understand the layout of the settlement between the lower village area and the fortified upper section without requiring any additional historical interpretation.

Further scattered ruins in the upper part of the hill of Borgo di Codiponte point to a former defensive structure that probably included a small church. The cautious nature of this statement remains important: what is visible are scattered ruins, while the former structure and the possible small church are inferred from them.

The Codiponte Bridge

The Codiponte Bridge also features distinctive architectural characteristics. Along its entire length, it has three humpback arches. In the middle of the bridge, there is a representation with a coat of arms of Pisa carved into it. The structure thus combines its construction with a specific heraldic detail that particularly catches the eye when viewing the crossing.

Museums, Palaces and Castles in the Surrounding Area

The Cava Museo museum, Castello Malaspina castle, Palazzo Cybo Malaspina palace and the Galleria d'Arte “Il Borgo” museum are located in the surroundings of Codiponte. These diverse destinations broaden the cultural perspective beyond the Pieve, the Borgo and the bridge: museum spaces, a palace and a castle represent different approaches to art, architecture and local history.

Landscape Context of the Apuan Alps

The northwestern part of the Apuan Alps Regional Park extends into Lunigiana on the side of the Magra River drainage basin in the municipalities of Casola in Lunigiana, Fivizzano and Fosdinovo. The surroundings of Codiponte also include Monte Pizzo d'Uccello, Monte Pisanino, Monte Sagro and Pizzo Maggiore. Thus, alongside the historic buildings, a striking mountain landscape also represents a distinct area of interest.
