Casola In Lunigiana: Medieval Traces between Two Mountain Ranges

Archaeological excavations at the pieve also document settlements of the ancient Ligurians in the 8th century, as well as a later Roman settlement from the Imperial period between the 1st and 4th centuries. With its figurative capitals, the Pieve di Codiponte is considered a prime example of Lunigiana Romanesque architecture.
The Pieve di San Pietro di Offiano has a Baroque appearance today as a result of renovations in the mid-18th century. It is located on a variant of the Via Francigena toward the Tea Pass. Today, only a few ruins of the Ospedale di San Nicolao di Tea remain. It was built along the road that connected the Val di Magra with the Garfagnana.
Mountain Landscapes and Historical Events
Because of its location, Casola in Lunigiana is considered a gateway to the Regional Park of the Apuan Alps from the Lunigiana side. At the same time, Casola in Lunigiana is part of the Via dei Mercati Medievali, a series of events featuring historical reenactments that take place between July and August.

A local baking tradition is also part of the town’s character: today, a single bakery in Casola regularly bakes Marocca di Casola.
