Avane: Historical Traces and Rock Climbing

Avane combines early written history with fortification remains, rock faces and paths in the Vecchiano landscape. The place was first mentioned in a document from 952. Historical Traces Around Avane

The Castello di Avane was first mentioned in 1026 as “castellum de Avane” and became part of Pisa’s fortification system during the conflicts between Lucca and Pisa. At Rosaiolo, historic fortification remains are located on the small Poggio di Rosaiolo. They are situated on the slopes of Monte Spazzavento near the river. The landscape remains specific: ditches and canals accompany the itineraries, while the hills of Avane form their broader setting.
