Balconevisi: Truffle Tradition, History and Landscape
If you would like to combine landscape, history and Italian culinary culture, Balconevisi offers several different points of interest. The village lies on a tuff hill between the Chiecina and Egola waterways. This distinctive setting provides the backdrop for historical traces, local events and destinations in the surrounding area.
Landscape and the Anello del Tartufo trail
A concrete way to experience the landscape is the Anello del Tartufo circular trail. It leads to the remains of a Roman tomb near Casa La Tomba. In this way, the route combines nature and archaeology without requiring you to focus on just one theme: the tuff hill, the two waterways and the Roman tomb remains each represent a different facet of Balconevisi.
Historical traces in the village
The architectural history can also be traced at individual points. The Church of San Pietro in Balconevisi was mentioned as early as 1260. Next to the ruins of the former church stands a Neo-Gothic brick bell tower, built at the end of the 19th century. The church, ruins and bell tower relate to different historical contexts and should therefore be considered separately.
Truffles, mushrooms and local festivals
An important culinary event in the village is the Sagra del Tartufo Bianco e del Fungo. The event takes place in the heart of Balconevisi, in Piazza 1° Maggio, and has a gastronomic extension at the “A. Posarelli” sports centre. The Sagra thus combines the central festival square with the gastronomic extension at the “A. Posarelli” sports centre as another venue for the festival. It was held for the first time in 1979 and reached its 48th edition. In the Palio del Papero, the four districts of Buecchio, Borgo, Fornacino and Fondo di Scesa each represent a pair of ducks; the relay race is 150 metres long.
Museums and historical destinations in the surrounding area
For cultural excursions, the area around Balconevisi is home to the Fondazione San Miniato Promozione, a museum, and the Museo Diocesano Di Arte Sacra, also a museum. The wider surrounding area also includes the Parco Preistorico Peccioli, an ancient site, as well as the Galleria d'Arte Nozzoli, a museum. These destinations have different focuses: museum visits, art and sacred culture stand alongside a site with an ancient character.
Landscape in the wider region
In the wider region around Balconevisi are La Cupola, a peak, the Giardino dei Pini, a garden, the Parco dei Salici, a park, and Monte Serra, a mountain. This gives you a choice of higher-elevation landscape points and designed green spaces when planning your trip. Which of these destinations you include may depend on the preferred balance between local history, nature and regional excursions.
