Querceto between the Castle, Pieve and Monterufoli

Querceto combines its historic castle complex with the Pieve di San Giovanni Battista, art at Castello Ginori di Querceto and a route through the natural and cultural landscape of Monterufoli. Castle Walls, Pieve and Art

Historically, Querceto was an important castle and provided the Comune di Volterra with around 600 armed men. The historic complex of Querceto was protected by a castle wall and included a gate, two squares and a cistern. These elements give the history of the place a tangible spatial framework.

Around 1100, the Pieve di San Giovanni Battista was moved inside the castle walls of Querceto; since then, the village has been its permanent seat. The Pieve is a simple Romanesque building with regular courses of small sandstone blocks. Its portal is surmounted by a majolica depicting the Madonna and Child from the Ginori porcelain manufacturers in Florence. It was installed there at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Castello Ginori di Querceto also continues the connection between architecture and art. Its salon displays paintings and valuable porcelain pieces belonging to the Ginori Lisci family. A wine tasting ends at La Dispensa del Castello, housed in Querceto's former oil mill with its original machinery, including a stone mill.

Route through Forest and Cultural Landscape

The “Il castello di Querceto e la foresta di Monterufoli” route begins in Querceto and gradually climbs along a gravel road. It then enters a nature reserve and passes through cool oak forests with high biodiversity. For orientation along the route, it is also important to note that the trail leads back to Querceto from the valley floor. Along the way, it passes through a well-maintained agricultural and pastoral landscape with panoramic views.

Castello di Querceto can be reached on foot; vehicle traffic is subject to a ZTL. This means that access to the Castello and travelling by car are not treated the same way on site. Especially if you want to combine the historic areas with the route, this distinction is part of practical orientation in Querceto.
