Riparbella: Wine Route, Woodland Landscape and Culture

Riparbella lies in a landscape shaped in part by the Il Giardino–Scornabecchi woodland complex. It extends across 632 hectares between Riparbella and Montescudaio, on the first hills overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast. The Anello del Vino starts at Il Giardino. Trail no. 6, “Alla scoperta del Giardino”, runs through the protected “Giardino” area, while La Cascata is located in Loc. Il Giardino. Hiking trails in Giardino

The “La Cascata” circular trail in Loc. Il Giardino is 10.6 kilometres long and moderately difficult. The route leads to Cascatoio; a spring there can be reached via a wooden footbridge. The 7 kilometres of trail no. 6 and the 10.6 kilometres of La Cascata offer two differently sized loops for planning the day; at La Cascata, the destination Cascatoio is an additional feature.

Natural environment and wildlife watching

The woodland complex is part of Tuscany’s regional agricultural and forestry heritage and is managed by the municipality of Riparbella. In Giardino Scornabecchi, the wildlife reintroduction area covers approximately 290 hectares; guided wildlife-watching excursions are organised there. The figure of approximately 290 hectares refers to the reintroduction area, not to the woodland complex as a whole.

Culture, land art and local history

The C'ERA – Centro Espositivo Riparbella Antica in the municipal library displays around 50 Etruscan artefacts from Belora, including a golden funerary crown from the Hellenistic period. Bilingual panels in Italian and English, as well as multisensory tours, are aimed at residents, schools and visitors. The permanent “Paesaggi Cosmici” land-art trail, featuring five installations about the universe, is also located in the Giardino Scornabecchi forest. The monumental Bellincioni Cemetery was declared a national monument in 1989.
