Luciana between SP 21 and Valdera

Luciana combines a clearly recognizable settlement pattern with a landscape and cultural history shaped by different periods. The built-up area lies along the SP 21 Pian della Tora provincial road. At the same time, Luciana is located in the hilly landscape of the Valdera and the Pisan countryside. This gives you a place where sacred architecture, historic villas and geological traces from very different periods come together.

Churches and Villas in Luciana

The parish church of Santa Lucia is at the heart of the town’s history. It was built in 1740 on the foundations of a medieval predecessor. The church contains a chapel dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario. The church thus links architectural history with a specific religious space and offers travelers interested in culture an illustrative way to understand the development of the town.

In the Chiesa della Compagnia, the floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. Among Luciana’s historically significant villas and farm estates is Villa Giustiniani. The garden of Villa Melenchini also contains milestones from the nearby Via Emilia Scauri. Architecture and these historical remnants therefore point to different forms of local history, without reducing Luciana to a single theme.

A Landscape Spanning Deep Time

The landscape, too, tells of a much more ancient past. During the geological epoch of the Pleistocene, Luciana was covered by the sea. Numerous fossils have been found in the Luciana area, including shells and the remains of a sperm whale. For travelers who want to understand the landscape not only as a backdrop but also as geological history, these finds add a maritime deep-time perspective to the view of the hilly Valdera. The finds thus give the area an additional natural-history dimension.

Human presence in the Luciana area can be traced back to the Bronze Age. The earliest records of Luciana date from the Middle Ages. There is also a significant turning point in the town’s more recent history: the 1846 earthquake caused severe damage to religious buildings and villas in Luciana and the surrounding area. These different historical layers shape the town’s historical classification.

Paths through the Valleys

The municipality of Fauglia had already organized an excursion on the Cammino d’Etruria in cooperation with the Agorà and Cammini d’Etruria associations. It led along country roads and paths through the valleys of Acciaiolo, Santo Regolo and Luciana. The walking time planned for this excursion was approximately three to four hours.
