Historic Sites with Panoramic Views
Santa Maria a Monte combines historic sites with art, views and local festivals. In the Borgo, the La Rocca Archaeological Area is located at the highest point; the archaeological site also offers visitors a panoramic terrace. From the top floor of the Torre dell’Orologio, the view extends across the entire Valdarno and to the other castle towers. A walk through the town therefore focuses both on the history of the Borgo and on its landscape.
A particular focus is the Museo Casa Carducci. The museum is located in the house where the Carducci family lived from 1856 to 1858. On permanent display is the exhibition “Il Tenero Gigante” by Possenti, featuring 26 paintings and drawings inspired by the life and work of the poet Giosuè Carducci. This gives you a particularly tangible connection to the town’s literary history: the house, the poet and the artistic interpretation are brought together in one place.
Museums and Sacred Art
The Museo Civico complements this cultural experience with an archaeological tour on the first floor. On display are finds from the excavations at Sant'Ippolito in Anniano and La Rocca. The Museo Civico also houses a medieval Madonna and Child statue made of painted and gilded wood. The statue is kept in the Collegiata di Santa Maria a Monte and is dated to 1255.
The Collegiata also preserves a wooden crucifix attributed to the Master of the Camaiore Crucifix, dating from the first quarter of the 14th century. Another historic detail awaits you in the Biblioteca Comunale: a medieval cistern is already mentioned in the statutes of 1391 and is still visible there today.
Religious Traditions and Festivals
The Beata Diana Giuntini is celebrated with the traditional Processione delle Paniere every Easter Monday. This annual procession is one of the traditions of Santa Maria a Monte explicitly associated with the Beata Diana and adds a religious note to the town’s yearly calendar.
The Sagra della Patata Fritta also shapes the events calendar. It generally takes place in the second half of August in the historic center and on the squares of the Borgo Santa Maria a Monte. Every evening, frying begins at around 6:00 p.m. in the traditional “padellone.” The food stalls offer a menu featuring potatoes from Santa Maria a Monte, as well as another menu with typical Tuscan dishes.
