A place with Lombard roots

Lajatico is an ancient settlement of Lombard origin. In the past, the town was a castle belonging to the Counts Pannocchieschi and the Bishop of Volterra. In the town center, Lajatico Castle dates back to before the year 1000; apart from the side facing the main piazza, little of it remains. Palazzo Pretorio preserves visible prison rooms, its original structure, and the coats of arms of Lajatico’s former lords.

The Teatro del Silenzio

The Teatro del Silenzio is a natural amphitheater on a hill, 1.5 kilometers from the center of Lajatico. The event held there every year features performances from the world of opera, international pop stars, and performance artists. In this way, a venue for different artistic forms complements the town’s historical themes.

Historical traces and vivid details

The original Pieve di San Leonardo dates back to 1275. The Oratorio di San Sebastiano was built in 1520 as a meeting place for prayer and the charitable works of a brotherhood. Piazza Vittorio Veneto features an installation bearing the inscription “Speakers’ Corner – Angolo del parlatore” and a removable stool. Alongside the older buildings, such concrete details give the view of the town an immediate, contemporary connection.

Rocca and trails through the countryside

The Rocca di Pietracassia is an early medieval fortification in the municipality of Lajatico. From there, the view extends across the entire Valdera and large parts of the Val di Cecina as far as the nearby city of Volterra.
